This is a great idea! We are encouraging those who want to enjoy fireworks to go to the State Fair Park. Already this year, in the Valley, there have been several fires. It's always dry and windy, so why risk it?

Also, using fireworks in Union Gap is NOT ALLOWED and is a misdemeanor. If you are convicted, you could go to jail for 90 days or be fined up to $1,000. If you start a fire, you are liable, criminally and civilly. Be smart and safe this 4th of July. Union Gap Transit is offering free transit to the State Fair Park!

PLEASE AVOID THE AREA. We are aware that the traffic signal lights at S 3rd Ave and Valley Mall Blvd, as well as S 16th Ave and Valley Mall Blvd, are not functioning. There is a reported power outage in the area.

Please follow traffic laws, and when approaching a controlled intersection with non-functioning traffic signals, come to a complete stop behind the white stop line and proceed in turn. We’ve been advised the signals may be out until at least 2:30 pm. If you are coming into the area, give yourself extra time to reach your destination and drive carefully. #TrafficAlert

Officer Nunez is investigating a missing person case. Pictured is 67‑year‑old Rudolfo “Rudy” Perales. He was last seen in December 2025 in the area around the Mission, located at 1300 N 1st St in Yakima. Perales has family in the area who have not been able to locate him.

On March 22, 2026, at approximately 3:12 p.m., Union Gap Police officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of 4th Street for a reported domestic incident. The caller reported that an adult male had obtained a rifle and made suicidal statements to family members.

Officers from the Union Gap Police Department responded and requested assistance from the Yakima Police Department, Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, and Selah Police Department.

The subject barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to comply with officers’ commands. Due to the circumstances, the Yakima Valley Crisis Response Unit (YVCRU) was requested. At approximately 6:07 p.m., before the full team arrived, officers safely took the male into custody without further incident. He was later booked in jail for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the First Degree.

The Union Gap Police Department extends its appreciation to the Yakima Police Department, Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, Selah Police Department, members of the YVCRU, crisis negotiators, and East Valley Fire for their assistance and coordinated efforts that contributed to a safe and successful resolution. 26U001140-1

Detective Jimenez is investigating an arson that happened in the early morning hours on 03/03/2026 in the 1400 block of S 14th St. Attached photos are those of the suspect, seen in the shadows of a surveillance camera, setting cardboard on fire. The fire damaged part of the building. Estimates of the damage are not known yet. Suspect is male, wearing white shoes, black pants, and a black puffy jacket. If you are a resident of Union Gap, you are eligible to apply as a member of the civil service commission. This is a three-person commission that meets every 1st Monday of every month at 4:00 pm. You meet with the Union Gap Police Chief.

The civil service commissioners are authorized to promulgate rules and regulations that substantially accomplish the purposes of the civil service statutes. Holiday cheer is in the air—and so is traffic. Expect heavy congestion near Costco on Valley Mall Boulevard, particularly the westbound overpass. Officers have handled multiple collisions already as shoppers rush for holiday supplies. Please ease off the gas, add a little extra time, and help keep everyone safe!

TRAFFIC ALERT

As traffic increases in Union Gap, provide yourself with plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Use extreme caution when traveling either west or eastbound over the Valley Mall overpass. Traffic can back up at the intersection of Valley Mall Blvd and Longfibre Rd, and as you crest the overpass, vehicles can be stopped. Yesterday, five cars ran into the back of each other because of this. #safedriving #TrafficAlert

Officer Gonzalez took a stolen vehicle report last month from the 100 block of Ahtanum Rd. This vehicle, a 2023 CF Moto ZForce 950, Washington license X161203, was taken sometime during August. The attached photo is the same vehicle that was stolen.

We are asking for your help in locating this stolen vehicle. If you locate this vehicle, call 911. This post will be updated once the vehicle is located and recovered. Union Gap Case 25U003832.
