Public Notice: Slope Repair and Stabilization on Route 34

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced that slope repair and stabilization work will begin on Route 34 in Newtown on Monday, August 3, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed by Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Traffic Impact:
Throughout this period, a lane closure will be in effect between Jordan Hill Road and Great Quarter Road. A temporary traffic signal will manage alternating one-way traffic.

Project Details:
This project (No. 0170-3758) includes the installation of temporary precast concrete barriers, steel sheet piles, stone rip rap, and pavement line striping.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed through the work zone. Please be aware that the project schedule may be subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.

Town of Newtown Post-Storm Update – Tuesday, July 7, 2026

Newtown’s Emergency Management Team, which includes the First Selectman, Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatch and Public Works, continues to work around the clock with Eversource and our Public Works Department to restore services and clear roads after the recent storm. We are pleased to report significant progress over the past 24 hours.

Current Status:
Power Outages: Reduced from over 1,200 to approximately 84 homes. Eversource crews are actively working in the remaining affected areas.

Road Closures: All roads are now open.

Public Works teams continue debris removal and are conducting final safety checks.
We appreciate your patience as we complete these final restorations. Crews are expected to remain on site throughout the evening and into tomorrow.

Storm Update for Newtown Residents

Newtown’s Emergency Management Team — which includes the First Selectman, Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatch, and Public Works — has been meeting throughout the day and provides the following update:

Coordination and restoration efforts with Eversource continue around the clock. Utility crews are working diligently during the day and night, whenever conditions are safe (they will not work during high winds or torrential rain). https://t.co/2QYadJCgMV

Road Status Update:
- We began with 59 closed roads.
- 36 roads have been fully opened.
- 5 roads remain fully closed/blocked.
- 18 roads are partially open with limited access and still require additional work to fully reopen.

Important Safety Reminders:
Do not approach, walk near, drive over, or attempt to move any downed power lines. Treat all downed lines as energized and dangerous.
Do not travel on closed roads. These roads have been closed for your safety.

Heavy rains may continue to bring down more trees. Please use caution when traveling, stay alert, and exercise patience as crews work through the damage.

Estimated Times of Restoration (ETRs) are determined by Eversource. Given the widespread damage across our community, full power restoration may still take several days. We are continuing to work closely with Eversource until power is fully restored to all residents.

An important update from our Emergency Management Team:

July 5, 2026 –
Newtown, and our neighbors and towns throughout the State, experienced a fast moving and damaging storm.

Town officials, the Emergency Management Director and the Public Works Director have been in contact with our Eversource contacts.

Eversource personnel are in Newtown. Crews will work through the night and in the inclement weather.

Efforts will focus on closed roads that are completely cut off by downed trees and wires.

We cannot state any Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR’s) yet, however, Eversource will be making them available soon. When more detailed information is available, we will encourage you to check with Eversource for an estimate for your specific power restoration. Again, based on the extent of the damage to our community, and the lower but increasing number of Eversource crews responding here in Town, it is reasonable to assume complete restoration of power may still take several days. We will continue to press on with Eversource until this is resolved.

The Emergency Management Team, which includes Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatch and Public Works, will be in contact and reconvene throughout the days and provide additional updates.

Heads Up from CTDOT – Automated Work Zone Speed Control on I-84

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will be deploying Automated Work Zone Speed Control (AWZSC) mobile equipment on I-84 in Newtown beginning the week of June 22, 2026, for approximately two weeks while conducting roadway maintenance.

Key Information: The system will begin issuing warnings to vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit starting in late June 2026.

Citations and monetary fines will begin on or after July 5, 2026.
The equipment will be operated by CTDOT’s vendor, Acusensus.

Please note that the schedule may be adjusted due to weather or other operational needs.

Newtown Police Department Urges Drivers to Prioritize Pedestrian Safety

The Newtown Police Department is joining the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to encourage all drivers in our community to slow down and remain vigilant for pedestrians.

“In Newtown, we want to ensure that our residents are safe on the sidewalks, crossing the street, and everywhere they walk.” “Everyone should be able to navigate our community without fear or stress. We urge all drivers to take the time to look out for pedestrians, slow down, and incorporate pedestrian awareness into their daily driving routines.” - Chief David Kullgren

At some point during the day, everyone is a pedestrian. To keep our community safe, the Newtown Police Department reinforces these essential driving tips:
-Use extra caution in low light: 76% of pedestrian fatalities in 2024 occurred at night.
-Observe speed limits: Be especially vigilant around schools, neighborhoods, and areas where children are present.
-Drive sober: Alcohol use was a factor in 43% of all fatal pedestrian crashes in 2024.
-Yield to pedestrians: Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
-Stay alert: Constantly scan for pedestrians and be mindful of your vehicle's blind spots.
-Never pass stopped vehicles: If a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk, do not pass it; there may be people crossing who are not immediately visible.
