The Policy Lab co-designs policy approaches with agencies to develop and deliver effective, tested, user-focused digital policy and strategy across the NSW Gov.
Thank you @piawaugh for featuring our work at digital.nsw event! We are excited to be working on the NSW AI Ethics Framework, AI Strategy and the AI Summit. We will be updating our progress at https://t.co/WJH5iOphHA .
🎉 @PolicyLabAU are six months old 🎉
Here's some of what they learned from pairing human-centred design and policy:
- backing from the boss helps
- working in the open forms connections
- iterating is key

Our experience is that agencies want to implement AI ethically, but they want and need practical guidance and tools. We went into this in our recent blog post: https://t.co/nX1LUXwvJv
AI ethics nuts, here’s your new wall poster. An absolutely beautiful mapping of the field by Harvard. 👏
There’s no shortage of principles. We just need to find ways of making them bite. To consistently and really matter.

'Working Out Loud' has been one of the central tenants of @PolicyLabAU - in our first 6 months we did 10 blogs posts, released 8 tools, guides and articles, and built out our website and Twitter presence.
It was great to hear @stefanhajkowicz set out his account of global digital megatrends at @PolicyLabAU today and to discuss his ideas with colleagues from many different backgrounds. Exactly the kind of debate we need right now.
Prof Marc Stears (@mds49) of the @SydneyPolicyLab; “We need to as comfortable with not knowing as we are with knowing. Shifts in paradigms mean we may not be able to have all the answers. Agility & resilience are key. We need to be able to move between possible futures”
Digital advances present great opportunities, but they’re not without flaws, says @stefanhajkowicz.
Biased data sets in #AI, social platforms being linked to heightened stress and anxiety, #cybersecurity issues. Many things we need to mindful of as we reap the benefits.
@stefanhajkowicz: “Australia puts out about 5000 qualified ICT grads a year, but the demand is for 20,000”.
The skills shortage is a key limit on digital transformation.
“Having an evidence-based narrative of the future you’re looking at is a great way to start problem-solving and working with stakeholders towards the solution.” - @stefanhajkowicz
Want insights into the coming decade of digital disruption? @PolicyLabAU have partnered with @Data61news to bring experts in the field to Sydney this morning.
@stefanhajkowicz has kicked things off, talking geopolitical, social, economic, environmental and tech trends.
Dr Stefan Hajkowicz of @Data61news: “Megatrends are slow to develop, but hit with sudden and explosive force, radically reshaping industries.” So, the question is what can orgs. And governments do proactively to prepare?
We’re at the Sydney Startup Hub this morning, talking about digital megatrends with @Data61news and a bevy of experts. Couldn’t make it? Don’t worry, we’ll be posting the video and transcript soon.
"Government is supposed to work for people. If it’s supposed to work for people, then its core capability and competence should be in human-centered design." @pahlkadot#CivicTech#DigitalGovernment#HCD
