Either Mamdani makes this announcement (that follows the trend of what government policy typically is during heat waves) and he gets major flak for it. Or he says nothing and the first time the grid suffers every republican is on his ass anyway probably 10x worse. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment.

A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let's ease demand — and get through the heat — together.

He didn’t go to everyone’s house and force them to change their thermostat to 78. He just asked if people could help out, while also showing that they’re trying to do their part to help the grid. It’s a totally normal response to a massive persisting heat wave. We should argue more about improving the grid than what he’s saying to do.

It might seem crazy, but to a good chunk of people (especially those with kids) something as simple as having an extra hand to fold clothes, pickup, etc. can make a lot of difference in how much free time you have in your household.

If Isaac 2 in the future can pick up things like dishes, or somehow outside maintenance I think it would be an absolute clear choice for upper middle class and above homes.

I remember my brother telling me his first car wreck as a police officer was a 19 year old girl at around 5AM. Wasn’t drinking, wasn’t partying, wasn’t high etc. she looked down at her phone to send a text, went into the ditch. Veered back onto the road and overcorrected over into another ditch. When the car flipped it hit a tree, and my brother found her body through the windshield.

Doing anything while driving is careless and should result in far worse than a 24 hour twitch ban.
