5 — The Australian example

Operation Fortress takes inspiration from Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders.

Reform claims illegal boat arrivals to Australia collapsed to near-zero after its introduction, with no illegal boat migrant reaching Australian soil for 1,400 days between 2014 and 2018.

Its argument: deterrence works when interception and return are guaranteed.

Reform’s Operation Fortress would deploy the Royal Navy to intercept every small boat attempting to cross the Channel.

Migrants would be rescued, medically assessed and given food and water — before being returned to France or Belgium.
