As Ed Balls accurately points out, Nigel Farage has been offered a level of protection that goes beyond that provided to most members of the cabinet. He may not feel that is adequate. But as I said yesterday, Zia Yusuf's claim that Reform are being offered zero state protection was utterly false.

On the issue of what stirs up hate:

* Reform hosted Lucy Conolly on their main stage at conference

* Senior members of Reform, such as Zia Yusuf, regularly describe their political opponents as "traitors"

* When Keir Starmer's house was firebombed, prominent Reform supporters circulated Russian propaganda minimising, and joking about, the attack

So when it comes to political discourse what are the rules. If jeering at Nigel Farage in the House of Commons chamber crosses a line, what is the line now.

Labour paused canvassing out of respect for Anne Widdecombe’s death. Meanwhile, Reform continued canvassing as normal in Clacton.

When Jo Cox was murdered, Leave and Remain agreed to pause campaigning. Only the Remain team did so.
