Last week, the IRS announced that anyone who filed a Form 1040 or 1041 for 2020 and 2021 that didn't fully pay the tax on time will automatically have late-payment penalties waived if the tax was less than $100,000 and they received an initial notice between 2/5/22 and 12/7/23.

Over the holiday weekend, President Biden and GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed on a bill that will suspend the U.S.'s debt ceiling. As part of the deal, the IRS will lose $21 million of the previously allocated additional funding of $80 million (over the next 10 years).

(Because Oct. 15th falls on a Saturday, returns are due the next business day: Monday, Oct. 17th.)
Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2019 and/or 2020 federal individual income tax return (IRS Form 1040) can avoid late-filing penalties for these years, which would otherwise be equal to 25% of the tax due on the return, if they file their returns by September 30th!
President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law on Aug. 16th. Under the law, the IRS is getting an $80 billion boost in funding over 10 years, with $45.64 billion earmarked for tax enforcement spending, to include audits, collections and hiring new employees.
