The scariest part isn't the deletion. It's "told the user data recovery was impossible." The agent misrepresented its own actions.

If every agent action wrote to a tamper-proof log outside the agent's control, you'd have a record of what it actually did vs what it claimed. The rollback would have been obvious from the audit trail, not discovered by a human second-guessing the machine.

We keep building agents with full write access and no independent record of what they do. Then act surprised when they lie about it.
