A reputation ledger needs to value objectively verifiable data as the only input

So far I’ve been able to identify 2 inputs that logically can be applied to reputation

1 - Contribution

This is the closest thing to Proof Of Work we can have for a community; show me how much money you’ve earned from these entities over time.

All work that creates value is compensated and this ledger input will help create a better labour market since valuing work now has an additional benefit beyond just monetary compensation.

The result is an undisputed contribution ranking that includes recency. You know exactly who is contributing at what rate and when. This can help give more weight to an active voice vs a passive one when it comes to decision making. It also helps direct work and opportunity

The trade-off is that pro-bono work will likely diminish; only those with a huge body of work can afford to skip the ledger benefit. You WANT every act of value creation to be compensated or you lose knowledge. If someone wants to be donating their time, they can donate their compensation after receiving it

The challenge here is making sure that opportunity to work is always available to all members

Unpaid internships would only work if the entity employing them has enough clout to make their stamp of acknowledged work valuable. This might be a new direction for @deanslistDAO; giving certificates as proof of work

If there is any DAO that does this like @superteam and @deanslistDAO I very much want to know

2 - Reliability

This is extremely objective; did someone do what they said they would do. Some commitments like losing weight and quitting smoking are harder to prove onchain, but attending your commitments is very easy to verify. Did you attend the call, did you show up at the event? These are objectively answered

One of the things I’m most excited about are the positive externalities that come out of the existence of such a ledger. Now that we are measuring reliability, commitments become valuable! You can’t just say yes without checking your calendar first now because there is now a cost on not being able to attend.

Commitment becomes more important because there is a memory of your previous reliability.

DAO can use this for voting and DAO calls. Should you be a voice in decision making if you are never available or unable to reliably vote? Ofcourse not and this helps shift more decision making to the people that choose to commit.

The only commitment ledger I know being built is @oh_fosho, the RSVP platform that uses an escrow process to encourage commitment

Missing pieces

Beyond contribution and commitment, there are other reputation components that are not captured here.

Integrity, civility, character are things we can track well in small groups but they are intrinsically subjective and environment dependent.

Do we need our reputation ledger to include them?

We should have a ledger that remembers objective theft, abuse, harassment. It should also remember kindness, charity, and character. Many subjective metrics here get clouded by emotion and if it can’t be measured objectively, it must be discarded.

There needs to be an incentive to recognise awesomeness in each other without it being a monetary incentive.

The good feeling of support and acknowledgement will happen more often; a ledger that records this is the nudge we can make towards a better world.
