We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:
A moment of calm in our hay meadows.
The warm weather has really brought them on this week, ox-eye daisies beginning to flower now.
There’s over 100 species of plants in these 3 fields, and each year seems to bring more diversity.
It was buzzing with invertebrates and birdsong 😊
The Xerces Society offers on-the-ground technical assistance to farmers and ranchers interested in pollinator conservation. During the pandemic, site visits were curtailed, but with masks, distancing, and vaccines, our staff are venturing out again.

If you’re urban & like bees:
1. Consider a bee lawn (think wild-flower meadow instead of turf). Can be mowed for a manicured look.
3. Add water to your summer garden - bees get thirsty!
2. Leave deadfall clean-up till spring - bees need places to overwinter.

I love the idea that there’s sooooo much more to learn about the universe.
Side pt: the architecture of advanced physics has an Austin Powers x Soviet State Secret Service vibe. Why?

Wondered what to do w RC Honey’s remaining colonies now we’ve decided to close. Experienced our largest over-wintering losses since 2018 - so smaller problem, 😓. Talked to other LM beekeepers who’ve suffered similar losses. No late cold snap this year. Puzzling, frustrating, sad
I didn't set out to write a 3,000-word feature on tribal sovereignty and butterflies, but here we are. My latest, on why our pollinators are disappearing, the tribal nations working to reverse the damage, and the strength of nation-to-nation partnerships: https://t.co/3aPWSMOyNv
