Today is another important step for health access in Jacksonville and for families as Ascension St. Vincent’s opens their newest ER facility at Beach and Kernan today. More access to emergency care makes us a stronger, healthier city. Congratulations and thank you to the Ascension St. Vincent’s team for identifying a need and filling it. That's the kind of partnership local government values.
Dr. Phil’s comments last night missed a critical truth about America’s foundation. My father, #MLK, challenged the myth that our prosperity came solely from “hard work”. He said:
"Again we have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of Black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – both Black and white, both here and abroad.” – The Three Evils of Society, 1967.
We must confront our history honestly. DEI isn’t a trend; it’s a step toward justice, addressing the systemic imbalances that linger from our past. Real strength is found when all people have an equal chance to thrive.

For most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, racist White men at political rallies would say that their “hard work” built this country. They raged against any other group receiving rights, resources, or opportunities. Now, they say this.
This country was absolutely built on hard work Dr. Phil…on the backs of Black, Brown, and lmmigrants from all across this WORLD! Many of which who were forced to do so!
SLAVERY.
Let us know when you’re ready to tell the WHOLE story.
One of the most violent racist ideas is the notion that Latinos are hyper-sexual. Which feeds the racist notion that Latino immigrants are “rapists,” to use Trump’s term, justifying racist vigilante and police violence. The same idea feeds the racist notion that Latina immigrants can’t be raped, covering up the sexual violence they routinely face. If this sounds familiar to Black, Native, and Asian Americans, then that is because these racist ideas of hyper-sexuality have been ascribed to women and men in our communities too.
On National First Responder Day today, we would like to recognize all of our local First Responders. Whether it's 911 operators answering the call, the brave men and women who head towards danger, or linemen restoring power during storms, thank you so much for your service.
This initiative is a historic step for our city in terms of celebrating and investing in our homegrown talent. We can’t wait to see, hear, and be inspired by what these artists use their grant funds to create.
Congratulations to the 2024 recipients of the Jacksonville Film & Television Awards!

It was an honor to present my dear friend, Judge Audrey Moran, with the key to the city @LeadershipJax Luncheon as she received the Frederick Schulz lifetime achievement award. Her tireless work in the legal and justice system, city government, non-profits, and elected office is a testament to a life of service. Her message to “Lead with love” is one that I strive to embrace. Thank you Audrey, for always showing up for Jacksonville. You are a true inspiration.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to demonstrate support, the Duval County Clerk of Courts and @HubbardHouse have planted 6,546 purple flags on the courthouse lawn - each representing a survivor who filed an injunction case last year.
