A study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases revealed that two-thirds of samples collected from patients at Al-Ahli Hospital in the Gaza Strip contain bacteria resistant to multiple types of antibiotics, indicating the spread of so-called “superbugs” in an environment facing the near-total collapse of the health system. The outbreak is driven by severe shortages of medical supplies, deteriorating sanitation services, malnutrition, and the widespread destruction of hospitals caused by the war.

The study warned that these infections lead to more severe illnesses, longer treatment periods, higher mortality rates, and an increased need for limb amputations.

The World Health Organization cautioned that more than half of Gaza’s hospitals are out of service, while the few remaining facilities are operating far beyond their capacity, amid severe difficulties in delivering medical supplies due to Israeli restrictions.
