On 5 May, our Patron His Majesty The King is inviting veterans to a Tea Party at Buckingham Palace.
Following the procession led by 100-year-old WWII veteran Alan Kennett, it will celebrate those who contributed to the war effort 80 years ago.
At Combat Stress, we know the importance of choosing the right trauma-focused therapy. Upon seeking support from us, some veterans may be drawn to the storying approach of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), while others may prefer to engage with therapy that doesn’t involve as much talking.
One of the empirically evidenced trauma-focused therapies we offer to veterans is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR involves a veteran talking about a traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral, or alternating left-right eye stimulation. This can range from moving your eyes from side-to-side, tapping your hands or listening to sounds alternating between your left and right ear.
Although EMDR’s approach is different to other trauma-focused therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or NET, it’s similar in that it involves re-visiting trauma memories and has been proven as highly effective at treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
