Human-centered data makes an impact. Great insight here from Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance: “You don’t want to be a ‘data-driven’ organization. You want to be a ‘values-driven’ organization that’s informed by data.”

What a great conversation today with KC metro survey champions! Thanks @azhandkc for the great photo. Thanks @etcinstitute for hosting and supporting the important work of surveying.
Can't pinpoint what we love MOST about King County's work here: heads-up focus on redefining public value, identification of fear of failure as a meaningful barrier, or maybe this: "it is best to proceed humbly through a ‘test and learn’ approach."

Are you hiring for a data analyst? You may be looking at the wrong candidates. Here are the top traits we'd recommend: curiosity, empathy and the ability to synthesize & summarize information. Specific tools can be taught; the above traits are the baseline for a good analyst.
Talking again this morning about the importance of good culture in local government and the fundamentals for a changing culture for the better. Our friends @NeilKleiman and @alexshermansong have written the definitive work to date on the subject.

Great checklist for city leaders to walk through when considering digital transformation projects. Question 1 is where everyone should start: "Does it align with our goals?"

Budget more funding for a health program and measure encounters. It may take years to find the right resource balance to move the needle on the right metrics. Be curious and don't be nervous to maybe get it wrong. Milestones help keep you from investing big on the wrong things.
Let's talk data and budgets. Co-founder Julie spent years in both a budget office and a data office. Here's what she says are two of the often missed keys to true data integration into the budget process:
2) Milestones. Budgets are typically short-term planning documents. Big outcome data takes years to move. Like life expectancy; not going to change that in one budget cycle. Find milestones to know if you are going in the right direction.
There are primaries tomorrow, so good time to review some interesting reported voting trends. The @uscensusbureau shows that the Midwest consistently dominates. Will Kansas, Michigan & Missouri show up Washington and Arizona tomorrow? Data suggests yes. Hit up those polls!
