The Kumasi Sports stadium was originally constructed in 1957 as gift from the United Africa Group (UAC), a subsidiary of Unilever, to the people of Ashanti region, particularly cocoa farmers, for the exceptionally high cocoa yield between 1953-1955. The stadium was a huge arena for multi sports events and traditional gatherings.
The UAC was the biggest commodity traders in Africa and primary exporter of timber and cocoa from West Africa.
Aside government projects in pre colonial and post colonial Ghana, the UAC was one of largest contributors to the built environment in Ghana, mostly Accra. They designed streets, shops, cinemas etc eg is the Kingsway Store.
The Kumasi stadium was thus their biggest project to compensate the people of Ashanti which then included (Western, Bono Ahafo) from the profit of cocoa exports.

Spent a week buried in researching and writing this story about the late Raphael Dwamena, whose funeral I attended yesterday. His story carries so much emotional and philosophical weight. Please read when you have some time: https://t.co/fqvHdovb6a
