Why Many in Panjab Do Not Celebrate Independence Day?
For many, it's a day of remembrance and observance. But, not celebration.
Panjabis are grateful for the hard-fought Freedom for which they sacrificed generations.
For most of India, 15th August is a day of flags, parades, and celebration. For Panjab, it is also a day of mourning.
In 1947, freedom came with a wound - Partition.
Borders were drawn in haste, yet they cut through centuries-old villages, fields, and families. Panjab was split apart, its heart bleeding on both sides.
Lives were lost. Trains arrived full of corpses. Neighbours who had shared meals the week before turned into strangers, even enemies. Entire towns were emptied overnight.
Families left behind their homes, their land, their memories - everything - to start again from nothing. Generations carried those scars, silently. The laughter in the fields was replaced by the cries of the displaced.
For Panjabis, Independence Day is not just about freedom from the British. It is a reminder of the price we paid for it - a price that still echoes in our ballads, our stories, and our silences.
It is not a day for fireworks. It is a day for remembrance. A day to bow our heads to those who never made it across. A day to realize that freedom, when soaked in blood, tastes different.
This week marks the anniversaries of Indian and Pakistani independence — but behind the celebrations lies a history of rushed decisions and mass displacement.
