I study who gets forced to buy your stocks, and what it does to the price. Finance prof @ UQAM. Index funds, passive money and the plumbing that moves markets.
Really enjoyed this from @FTAlphaville. I measured it in actual fund holdings
and the picture shifts: index funds do nearly all the forced buying, active
managers barely move, so the real bid is closer to $9bn than $14bn. What it
does to the price:

SpaceX goes public today at $1.77tn. Over the next three weeks, index funds
will be forced to buy about $9 billion of it, at whatever price the market
sets.

One catch. In 490 past S&P 500 additions, the premium peaks about a month
after inclusion and mostly fades within a year. And most of the move arrives
before the formal dates, not on them.
Tesla rose for weeks into inclusion, then fell 6% the day index funds bought.
