⚠️ Tank Failure Investigation Reveals Critical Safety Failures at Paper Mill
The US Chemical Safety Board (CSB) released an update on the catastrophic tank failure at Nippon Dynawave Packaging's Washington mill that killed 11 workers and seriously injured 3 others in May.
The findings are sobering:
• A 1.2-million-gallon storage tank released 900,000 gallons of caustic white liquor at 200°F
• 3 separate inspections identified critical shell thinning below minimum safe thickness
• Inspection reports warned the tank was "unfit for service"
The CSB investigation continues, examining maintenance practices, regulatory compliance, and emergency response procedures.

Fatal chemical explosions at recycling facility: A series of explosions at an Ohio recycling plant has claimed two lives and injured multiple workers.
Firefighters reported tanks "full of chemicals that will ignite and explode violently" before the blast destroyed the facility's roof and walls.
This marks the second fatal incident for the company. A 2015 explosion at its Alabama location resulted in one death and $27,000 in OSHA fines for safety violations.

🎯 Achieving accuracy is one thing. Maintaining it for years? That's the real challenge.
Most plants don't struggle with conveyor belt scale calibration because they don't understand its importance. They struggle because calibration competes with production schedules, safety procedures, and resource constraints.
The distinction between "designed accuracy" and "maintained accuracy" matters more than most realize. A belt scale can be perfectly installed and commissioned, but if calibration is difficult, unsafe, or time-consuming, it simply won't happen at the intervals needed to prevent measurement drift.
David Hyer, president of THAYER SCALE-HYER INDUSTRIES, INC., covers these key points in this insightful article: ✅ Why calibration practicality is as critical as weighbridge design ✅ The real-world limitations of material testing, test chains, and static weights ✅ How access challenges impact long-term measurement confidence ✅ Building a practical calibration hierarchy that actually gets performed

🟠Natural Food Colors & the Reformulation Challenge
The shift from artificial to natural colors is accelerating, but cost, stability, and supply chain readiness are creating hurdles for food and beverage manufacturers.
What's driving the change? Federal guidance from HHS and FDA, state-level legislation, and consumer demand (75% of US adults express concern about synthetic dyes in one survey) are pushing the industry toward natural alternatives.
What's holding it back?
🔹Blue pigments remain elusive and expensive to source naturally
🔹 Some natural colors, like spirulina, are sensitive to pH and temperature
🔹 Agricultural planning from seed to harvest requires long-term coordination
The opportunity: FDA has sped up approval for alternatives and relaxed labeling rules to support the transition.
Major manufacturers like Nestlé, Mars Wrigley, and PepsiCo are leading the way, but the timeline varies by company.
