Dignity and Power Now has been partnering with Dr.Keel (@terencedouglaskeel) and the UCLA BioCritical Studies Lab for years to highlight what actually happens to people who die in custody. Check out Dr.Keel's interview with @uclaradio, and lookout for his upcoming book this fall!
Monday, March 30th marks the FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the Board of Supervisor’s approving the Men’s Central Jail (MCJ) Closure Report, and the 16th angelversary of John Horton the 3rd who was murdered inside MCJ by Deputy gangs.
FOUR people have died in the last SIX days in LA Sheriff’s custody. Four families forever changed just before Christmas.
Less than a month ago @LASDHQ were brought to the @LACountyBOS and claimed this crisis would be solved with iPads. It’s time to ACTUALLY close deadly MCJ✊🏾
L.A. County’s secretive $2 million payout to its CEO two months ago — first revealed by LAist this week— was to settle her claims that she was harmed by a ballot measure that will change her job to an elected position and by the county’s messaging.

38 deaths in 38 weeks and @LACountyBOS has still not presented a timeline to close the deadly Men’s Central Jail.
The County’s decision to invest in jails is fatal and tragic —and a deliberate choice given the alternatives to incarceration.
@AGRobBonta is moving in the right direction by acknowledging that LASD cannot and will not stop their negligence and violence voluntarily. But with several lawsuits against the department from families, the DOJ, and @ACLU_SoCal, we need more than that.
It's worth noting that we took statewide action with Terry Lovett less than a month before this lawsuit was announced—targeting every single office of @AGRobBonta across the state. Here's a timeline depicting how we got here:
We have been calling for the actual implementation of recs from LA County's Alternative to Incarceration Report and Men's Central Jail closure report for years— because that is the only way we end the cruelty and deaths at the hands of LASD.
The jail conditions in LA have gotten so horrifically cruel that Attorney General Bonta has announced a lawsuit against the LA Sheriff's Department and the LA County.
As the lawsuits mount, LASD continues to defund taxpayers and amass record levels of deaths in their custody. 🧵
Two days after the LA jails got sued by the state for, among other things, the large number of in-custody deaths this year.... LASD just posted yet another.
37 deaths in 37 weeks.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit today against LASD and LA County over “unconstitutional and inhumane conditions” at LA County jails.
Bonta highlights that we’re on track to have “more in-custody deaths in 2025 than at any time in the past twenty years.”
36 deaths in 35 weeks. This is the deadliest year in LA sheriffs department custody and most people who have died are pretrial.
What more has to happen before @LACountyBOS finally takes the bold steps needed to close Men’s Central Jail?
If local governments are serious about their sanctuary policies, they should close this loophole by ending their agreements with the U.S. Marshals.

ICE's use of electronic monitoring has rapidly expanded.
Now, more than 200,000 people on any given day are regularly surveilled & detained by ICE – over 4x as many as a decade ago.
Shame on @kathrynbarger & the COUNTY LAWYERS for their intimidation and removal of two key members of the COC. Tell her that her support of Sheriff violence does NOT go unnoticed! Call her @ 213-974-5555 and visit https://t.co/90lCJPGxmu to see talking points #ProtecttheCOC
The decision to force out Bonner comes after several
moves by the county and their lawyers to prevent the COC from DOING THEIR JOB & investigating cases of severe brutality and murders by LASD.
