Trump’s standard rhetorical playbook combines exaggerated praise, public belittlement and transactional messaging to reinforce his preferred image as a leader to whom other leaders must defer. For example, Trump has alternated between flattering Modi and mocking or patronizing him.

Indian media would thus serve their audiences better by reporting Trump’s occasional praise for Modi in its full context and against the backdrop of his previous remarks, many of which were widely viewed as insulting or patronizing.

Trump has publicly mimicked Modi’s accent on multiple occasions, including at the APEC Summit late last year and at a House Republican event.

Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down his tariffs, Trump complained publicly that “PM Modi was ripping us off” on trade.

During a White House gathering last October, Trump discussed his relationship with Modi and his own influence, remarking — whether in jest or otherwise — that he “didn’t want to destroy [Modi’s] political career” or “end his political career.”

Speaking to House Republicans, Trump mocked Modi’s mannerisms while recounting a story about the Indian leader seeking a meeting to discuss tariffs, mimicking him as saying, “Sir, may I see you, please?” and portraying Modi as pleading his case.

When foreign leaders are publicly mocked or patronized, such remarks are often perceived as reflecting not merely on the individual leader but on the country they represent.

Italy’s prime minister has provided a useful example of how to respond to such irreverent comments. After Trump claimed that she “begged me to have a picture taken with me,” Giorgia Meloni replied: "Donald Trump's remarks are completely made up. I am frankly astonished... But there is one thing he needs to remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg."
