Two hundred fifty years ago, a free people decided it would answer to no king. It would answer to one another. New York has spent every year since keeping that promise, usually on its hardest days. In the early fires and fevers of a young city. In the workers tragically lost at Triangle Shirtwaist, whose deaths made every American workplace safer. In the long dark of the blackouts in the 70s. On a September morning we will never stop carrying or remembering. In the water that Superstorm Sandy left behind that changed the shape of our city. In a spring when the streets went silent and more than forty thousand of our family and neighbors did not come home. In the hundreds of thousands who arrived here years after that with almost nothing, and found a city built by immigrants ready to make room.

Every time, this city answered the same way. It decided, again, that everyone here is worth protecting.

For thirty years, New York City Emergency Management has been proudly to carry that work forward, turning centuries of hard lessons into one of the most prepared cities in the world. The alert before the storm. The cooling site before the heat. The emergency plan made by someone you’ll probably never meet, for a day you hope never comes. This is America and New York’s promise of democracy, in the shape of logistics, planning, response, community engagement, and public information. This is the quiet keeping of a promise older than our agency.

So celebrate today, and know that the promise across 250 years is still being built, and we are still on the job. The work continues.

Dear @WhiteHouse, my name is Rodney Smith Jr., founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service in Huntsville, Alabama. Through our 50 Yard Challenge, over 6,000 kids across the country have signed up to mow free lawns for the elderly, disabled, veterans, active-duty military, first responders, and single parents. With America celebrating its 250th birthday this year and me also being born on July 4th, I wanted to humbly ask if a few kids from our program and myself could travel to Washington, D.C. to help mow the White House lawn for this historic celebration.

More than anything, I want these kids to see how a simple act of service something as ordinary as mowing a lawn for someone in need can lead to extraordinary places. What better lesson in community service than showing them that helping others can take them all the way to our nation’s capital? I’d also love to bring my American flag-themed mower in hopes that the President might sign it, so I can later auction it off and donate 100% of the proceeds to a nonprofit supporting veterans. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to highlight the importance of service, patriotism, and the impact young people can have when they choose to make a difference. 🇺🇸
