The hate that Sonia Gandhi gets for being a foreign-origin woman, while Modi's closeness to Meloni is celebrated, is the same reason: the daughter-in-law has to be oppressed while a patriarch spending time with another woman who's not his wife is the definition of manliness.
In 2026, legal imagination in the highest court is stuck in invoking familial relations entailing a Head of the Family. A patriarch. A majoritarian patriarchal configuration , the HUF.
Can we think of a different way to describe the relationship between the Bar and the Bench?!!
The Bar and the Bench are required to hold each other to the highest standards.
I really think of Umar on a daily basis and wonder how he feels.
JNU, Umar Khalid’s own alma mater and historically one of India’s most important spaces for radical political thought, debate, and dissent, has cancelled an event to discuss his book Fractured Communities. Umar remains imprisoned, and now even his scholarship is being revoked by the university he once called home.
Let this be your sign to read Fractured Communities, treasure it, and spread the word. I had the honour of reading it and would recommend it to everyone.
These f*ckers who have banned and suspended all dissenting social media accounts at the order of the government (including mine) are now crying about Modi’s video being briefly unavailable and are asking Zuckerberg to apologise within 3 days. Wow.
No Indian Flag I see.
Ambedkar once wrote " The Brahmins do not have the patriotism of the Samurais of Japan. It is useless to hope that they will sacrifice their privileges as the Samurai class did, for the sake of national unity based on a new equality"
I can’t forget the image of a 15-years old girl looking helpless & shattered asking for forgiveness with folded hands. The online harassment seems so overwhelming that she might carry this trauma all her life. Everyone involved in this will have it much worse. Take it as a curse!
"The Left is smack in the middle of this movement. The Left is the feet on which this movement stands. The Left is the political strength and articulation of this movement. Of course, along with other people like Abhijeet Dipke, this movement was built, nurtured, made bigger by the articulation of the Left, by the organisational strength of the Left."
Shahid Tantray(@shahidtantray), a multimedia reporter at The Caravan, spoke to Neha several times over the course of the agitation, when they were on a hunger strike, as well as after Pradhan’s resignation. Read the entire interview here: https://t.co/lkwHsrimpn
He deliberately made that video to blow this out of proportion. It was aimed at his patriarchal supporters with daughters, to keep them in check. So in future no such youth-led protest arises & parents remain apprehensive. It was meant to scare women off from voicing themselves.
The patronizing tone of "I forgive the misguided kids", meant to reaffirm his status as a father-figure of India, impervious to criticism and reproach, as opposed to a mere public servant who can be voted out (in a functioning democracy) should concern anyone with a brain cell.
You saw @narendramodi's ridiculous video saying he forgives 'our daughters' for their abusive language at Jantar Mantar ... now read @AnandTeltumbde's brilliant piece in defence of the profanity of the protesters.
"Every hegemonic order establishes not only acceptable political opinions but also an acceptable political language. Civility, respectability and decorum become part of the discipline through which power regulates dissent: protesters are expected to be polite even while protesting injustice. But history suggests that ruptures typically begin by breaking this linguistic convention. The language of revolt is seldom parliamentary. It is emotional rather than measured, mocking rather than deferential, often deliberately transgressive – and what looks like vulgarity to the establishment is frequently the first public expression of accumulated humiliation and anger."
