The architecture firm von Gerkan, Marg & Partners won the 1965 design competition for a new, modern terminal at Tegel Airport. This rendering shows a second identical terminal east of the existing one, which was never built. #prattberlin

During the Soviet blockade of West Berlin in 1948, access was blocked via road, railway and water. The Western allies initiated the Berlin Airlift, delivering thousands of tons of supplies daily. A new airfield at the Tegel site was constructed in 90 days. #prattberlin

The Tegel Airport was originally built in response to West Berlin's need for supplies via airlift in 1948. There were no commercial flights there until 1960.

The Tegel airport site has been used for military operations since 1823. It was used in 1930 as a testing facility for fuel rockets, a project that only lasted 3 years, shutting down in 1933 due to an unpaid water bill.

The once forested area around Tegel Airport was once a hunting ground for Prussian royalty, and nearby was the Humboldt palace, or Schloss Tegel, which was home to Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, and built in 1558.
