This is a landmark moment. India has officially begun its transition into Stage 2 of Dr. Bhabha's 3-Stage Nuclear Program.

Stage 1: Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). This stage is complete and operational. India runs ~22 PHWRs which generate power and accumulate plutonium (Pu-239) fuel needed to feed Stage 2.

Stage 2: Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs). They use Stage 1 plutonium as fuel and are loaded with uranium-238 and thorium-232 around the core. FBRs convert U-238 and Th-232 into more fissile fuel - more Pu-239 and U-233 (from Th-232). The reactor BREEDS more fuel than it burns. The Kalpakkam FBR is now sustaining a controlled fission chain reaction.

Stage 3: Advanced Heavy Water Reactors (AHWRs) on Thorium. This is the end-goal. AHWRs will use the U-233 bred in Stage 2 as their main fuel, along with Th-232. India's massive Thorium reserves will give India virtually inexhaustible, indigenous, clean nuclear energy for centuries.

India is transitioning into Stage 2 (long way to go) - and demonstrating indigenous mastery of one of the most complex reactor technologies, without foreign assistance.

नैतिकता आणि उद्यमशीलता यांचा अपूर्व आणि आदर्श संगम रतनजी टाटा यांच्या ठायी होता. सुमारे १५० वर्षांची श्रेष्ठत्व आणि सचोटीची परंपरा असलेल्या टाटा ग्रुपची जबाबदारी यशस्वीरित्या पेलणारे रतनजी टाटा हे एक जिवंत आख्यायिका होते. त्यांनी वेळोवेळी दाखविलेला निर्णायक खंबीरपणा आणि मानसिक कणखरपणी टाटा ग्रूपला वेगळ्या औद्योगिक उंचीवर घेऊन गेला. त्यांना मी आदरपूर्वक श्रद्धांजली अर्पण करतो. रतनजी टाटा यांच्या पार्थिवावर शासकीय इतमामात अंत्यसंस्कार केले जातील.

रतनजी टाटा हे भारताचा अभिमान होते, येत्या पिढीच्या उद्योजकांसाठी ते नेहमीच एक आदर्श राहतील. रतनजी टाटा यांनी अतिशय कौशल्याने आंतरराष्ट्रीय पातळीवरच्या अनेक कंपन्यांना टेकओव्हर करुन व्यवसाय वाढवला. माहिती तंत्रज्ञानाच्या नव्या क्षेत्रांतही त्यांनी दमदारपणे आघाडी घेतली. टाटा ग्रूपची विश्वासार्हता जपत त्यांनी टाटा ग्रूपचा विस्तार केला. आपल्या निर्णयक्षमतेने त्यांनी टाटा ग्रुपच्या कंपन्यांमध्ये सळाळते चैतन्य निर्माण केले. नैतिकता जपत उद्योगाबरोबरच देश आणि समाजाचा विकास करण्याची टाटांची विचारधारा आणि परंपरा त्यांनी समर्थपणे सांभाळली. रतनजी टाटा यांची औद्योगिक झेप आकाशाला गवसणी घालणारी होती. तरुणांमधील कर्तृत्वाला, प्रयोगशिलतेला प्रोत्साहन देण्यात ते कायम आघाडीवर होते.

१९९१ मध्ये रतनजी टाटा टाटा समूहाचे अध्यक्ष झाले. त्यांच्या कार्यकाळात टाटा समूहाचा मोठ्या प्रमाणात विस्तार झाला. त्यांनी टेल्को (नंतर टाटा मोटर्स) ची कार निर्मिती क्षेत्रात आणि टाटा कन्सल्टन्सी सर्विसेस (TCS) ची माहिती तंत्रज्ञान क्षेत्रात आघाडीची कंपनी बनवली. तसेच, टाटा केमिकल्स, टाटा टी, टाटा स्टील यासारख्या अनेक कंपन्यांना त्यांनी यशस्वी केले. २०१२ मध्ये ते टाटा समूहाच्या अध्यक्षपदावरून निवृत्त झाले. मात्र, त्यानंतरही ते विविध उद्योगांना मार्गदर्शन करत होते.

२००८ च्या मुंबई हल्ल्यांनंतर रतनजी टाटा यांनी दाखवलेला खंबीरपणा सगळ्यांच्या कायमच स्मरणात राहील. त्यांचे निर्णय, धाडसी वृत्ती आणि सामाजिक बांधिलकी यांचे स्मरण कायम राहणार आहे.
