On July 11, 1924, Eric Liddell (李爱锐) became the first China-born athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. After refusing to run on Sunday in his best event, Liddell later set a world record while running a much longer event. 1/
He spent 12 years in Tianjin teaching at a Chinese boys’ school, 6 years in rural Xiaozhang as an evangelist, and his final years in Weifang in a Japanese prison camp. 3/

On July 10, 1970, 79-year-old Roman Catholic missionary James Walsh (华理柱) was released by the PRC government after serving 12 years of his 20-year prison sentence. He was the last western missionary to leave China after the communist takeover in 1949.
They were released under a form of house arrest, and their teenage son Bao Zhuoxuan was barred for three years from leaving the PRC to study overseas. Pray for this family to rest in the love of the Good Shepherd.

On July 9, 2015, the detention of Beijing attorney Wang Yu (王宇律师) marked the start of the 709 Crackdown (七零九案) on human rights activists that eventually ensnared over 300 people, including her husband Bao Longjun (包龙军先生). 1/

On July 8, 1803, intrepid pioneer missionary Karl Gützlaff (郭实腊) was born in Prussia. He was one of the first Protestant missionaries to dress in Chinese fashion, and he zealously spread the gospel in coastal voyages made in the face of official resistance. 1/
Gützlaff was a great inspiration to young Hudson Taylor, but he died in clouded circumstances in Hong Kong at age 48 soon after discovering that his use of Chinese workers for evangelism backfired when many falsely reported the results of their work. 2/

On July 7, 2012, the Roman Catholic bishop of Shanghai, Thaddeus Ma Daqin (马达钦主教), was placed under house arrest after announcing at his ordination mass that he was resigning from the government-controlled Patriotic Catholic Association. 1/

On July 6, 1842, John Ross was born in Scotland. Ross served 40+ years as a missionary in China’s n.e.—an area with many ethnic Koreans. He founded the Dongguan Church in Shenyang & worked with Seo Sang-ryun to produce the first Protestant translation of the Bible into Korean. 1/
Pray for Christians to foster ethnic reconciliation in beleaguered Xinjiang. “And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples & a great multitude of people from all Judea & Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre & Sidon…” Luke 6:17 3/3
The government launched a massive crackdown on alleged Uyghur terrorism that saw hundreds of thousands confined to concentration camp-like facilities. The crackdown also impacted local and foreign Christians, with most of the latter being forced to leave Xinjiang. 2/

On July 4, 1813, pioneer missionaries William Milne (米怜) and his wife Rachel Cowie Milne arrived in Macau after a 10-month voyage. China’s first Protestant pastor, Liang Fa (梁发牧师), came to Christ under Milne’s ministry and was baptized by him on Nov. 3, 1816. 1/
Milne wrote that "Learning the Chinese language requires bodies of iron, lungs of brass, heads of oak, hands of spring steel, eyes of eagles, hearts of apostles, memories of angels, and lives of Methuselah." Rachel died in 1819 and William in 1822 at age 37. 3/
