Valve has published its official response to the New York Attorney General's lawsuit regarding loot boxes in Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2.
They describe cosmetic items as equivalent to collectible trading cards with no effect on gameplay, and reject the claim that they constitute illegal gambling.
Valve states it has already taken extensive action against unauthorized third-party gambling sites, including locking over one million accounts and imposing trade restrictions.
The company is opposing the AG's demands to make items non-transferable and to collect additional user data, calling those requirements excessive.
If the Attorney General prevails, Valve warns that New York players could lose the ability to sell or trade their digital items.
