@JanelleCShane Oh yeah! If these are both the same bird, he's an intergrade for sure! He has the red mustache of the red-shafted and the nape-crescent of the yellow-shafted. Very cool!
@JanelleCShane It's fun to try and figure them out, though I've only seen red-shafted and intergrades that look like red-shafted but with the nape crescent, myself--I'd love to see one with the yellow shafts someday! They're beautiful birds, and I always think their faces look so friendly.
@JanelleCShane Yeah, the main things to look out for other than shaft color are mustache (red-shafted males=red, yellow-shafted males=black, both females=brown) and crescent (both sexes of yellow-shafted, neither of red-shafted). When those mix or don't match the shaft color, surely intergrade!
@JanelleCShane No problem! Intergrade flickers are tricky sometimes (I suppose most hybrid birds are, lol). My best guess would be that maybe you had one bird there, the red-naped bird came in while it was gone, and the first returned and chased it away? But it's so hard to tell.
@JanelleCShane The photos after the fight...also kiiind of look like we'd be able to see the crescent if it were present. Is it possible the bird with the crescent was an intruder, chased away again by the original bird? Any other shots with the nape/mustache/any hint of shaft color would help!
@JanelleCShane A male intergrade could have the red mustache and nape crescent, but there are a few photos that I THINK show enough of the back of the head/neck that it would be visible (particularly the 8:48:30 and 8:50:07 in a previous set of 12).

Enjoy your morning coffee with close ups of #RoyalCam chick and
a great view of her tube nose with the ridge running along her bill. Click on the link to read how this works to eliminate excess salt from what she is fed.

@RoyAlbatrossCam@AlbatrossCentre Is her bill okay? I hope that's just stuff stuck to it, but it's been there a while and it seems like there's more now...
Aaand a friend just told me how! I never would have even known that sparkly thing did anything. Silly me, looking in my settings to change a setting......
Is there some way to organize my twitter homepage, btw?? The tweets from people I don't follow are uuusually fine (as long as they're still about birds), but it's SO BADLY out of chronological order that I've almost stopped checking it at all out of frustration... 🙄
@RoyAlbatrossCam At about 17:55:30, YRK (who had just arrived) just sat and watched while another bird was very rough with the chick, and then finally kind of chased it off--but then she was VERY stern with others even coming near at all. Do you know why that might be?
