After former Finance Secretary, now former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan punctures holes in the 7.8% GDP growth numbers
“If the economy is really doing so well, why are we still unable to create enough good jobs? And why is investment not taking place?”

This man here has a passion for speaking a lot and making no sense. 465 words of bluster and deflection - without addressing Subhash Chandra Garg’s basic claim.
Let’s make this simple.
GDP growth is indeed 7.8% if you compare the revised Q1 figure of roughly ₹80 lakh crore last year with ₹88.27 lakh crore this year.
But that is not Garg’s argument.
His argument is that Q1 last year was originally reported at roughly ₹86 lakh crore (see image 3).
Now, for the purpose of calculating this year’s growth, that same Q1 figure has been revised down to roughly ₹80 lakh crore (see image 4).
And that matters.
Because:
₹86 lakh crore → ₹88.27 lakh crore = roughly 2.6% growth.
Whereas:
₹80 lakh crore → ₹88.27 lakh crore = 7.8% growth.
So the question Malviya spends 465 words avoiding is very simple:
Why was the previously reported Q1 GDP figure revised downward by roughly ₹6 lakh crore?
Because until that question is answered, shouting “7.8%” louder does not address the controversy.
Imagine your company told you last year that your salary was ₹86,000.
This year, it pays you ₹88,000. That is an increase of roughly 2.6%. Not impressive enough? No problem. Welcome to Modi School of Economics.
The company simply rewrites its old records and declares that your salary last year was not ₹86,000 but only ₹80,000, thanks to a convenient "new methodology". Suddenly, the same ₹88,000 salary is advertised as a spectacular 10% increase.
Then a brass band is stationed outside your house to celebrate this "historic financial miracle".
That's exactly what the Modi govt has done with GDP, according to former Finance Secretary and Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, who has raised questions about the Modi govt's celebrated 7.8% GDP growth figure.
The govt is beating drums across the country, with Prime Minister Modi presenting the number as another monumental achievement of his govt. But look beneath the headline and the statistical circus begins.
For the April–June 2025 quarter, the govt had originally estimated India’s GDP at current prices at approximately ₹86.05 lakh crore.
But when it came time to calculate growth for April–June 2026, the figure for the same quarter last year was revised downward to approximately ₹80 lakh crore.
Just like that, nearly ₹6 lakh crore vanished from last year's economy.
This year's GDP was estimated at ₹88.27 lakh crore.
Now look at the mathematics.
Using the figure originally announced by the govt:
₹86.05 lakh crore → ₹88.27 lakh crore
Nominal growth works out to only around 2.6%.
But after shrinking last year's figure to ₹80 lakh crore:
₹80 lakh crore → ₹88.27 lakh crore
Nominal growth suddenly jumps to 10.3%. Adjust it for inflation, and voilà, the govt gets its headline figure of 7.8% real GDP growth.
Bravo!
Growing the economy rapidly was apparently difficult, so the previous year's economy was made smaller instead.
According to Garg's argument, had last year's GDP figure not been revised downward, nominal growth would have been only around 2.6%. After accounting for inflation, real growth would have been close to ZERO.
So before Modi and his ministers injure their shoulders patting themselves on the back, they must answer a basic question.
Did India's economy actually grow spectacularly, or was last year's measuring scale simply rewritten to manufacture a spectacular-looking growth rate?
Because changing the baseline is not an economic miracle.
It is statistical makeup applied to an economy whose pain ordinary Indians experience every single day.
I explain analytical base of my conclusion that GDP growth in Q1 in 2026-27 in current price is 2.6% and in real terms close to 0. There are still messier distortions in sectoral performance with manufacturing and consumption witnessing negative growth. https://t.co/pvsjXlAdcq
𝟕.𝟖% 𝐆𝐃𝐏 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚, 𝟐.𝟔% 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Former Finance Secretary in the Modi Govt, Subhash Chandra Garg, has exposed how the Modi government has fudged GDP figures.
As per Garg, the government deliberately revised last year's GDP numbers downward to artificially inflate this year's growth rate. If the figures had not been fudged, 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐃𝐏 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟐.𝟔%, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝟕.𝟖%.
This isn't speculation. The Modi government's own fudged data is exposing the government's lie.
Garg's warning says it all:
"Recognise the reality of the Indian economic situation that 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡."
While the Modi government is celebrating fudged figures of 7.8%, it is hiding the real economic distress of the country.

India’s former Finance Secretary - Subhash Garg has raised serious concerns on the GDP growth data.
Hard facts about how last year’s current price GDP of ₹86 trillion was revised down to ₹80 trillion to arrive at a 7.8%, which would’ve otherwise been 2.6%
