Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited is set to acquire 60.72% of IDBI Bank for ₹52,878 crore. But a key part of its funding plan raises a bigger question: could IDBI end up helping finance its own takeover?
In ‘Is Fairfax Buying IDBI With IDBI’s Own Money?’, Palak Shah examines Fairfax chairman Prem Watsa’s comments to investors about IDBI potentially buying stakes in Go Digit General, Go Digit Life and IIFL Capital at market prices.
Fairfax president Peter Clarke valued the contribution of these three businesses at approximately $3 billion around ₹28,300 crore, or 54% of the proposed acquisition price. Fairfax has included this contribution among the potential sources of funding for the IDBI deal.
The proposed transactions are not final and remain subject to regulatory approvals. But they raise important questions about independent valuations, RBI investment limits, the use of IDBI’s capital and the interests of its minority shareholders.
The central question is not just what Fairfax is buying, but who ultimately pays for it.

Millions of SC, ST, OBC, PwD & EWS families trusted your words, Modi Ji. Your guarantee gave them hope that their hard-earned rights would be protected.
Today, they are asking just one question:
WAS YOUR PROMISE ONLY FOR VOTES, OR WAS IT A COMMITMENT TO THE NATION?
Modi Ji, please don't let that trust be broken. Honour your guarantee. Protect reservation!

VIDEO | Chennai, Tamil Nadu: AIBEA General Secretary CH Venkatachalam opposes the proposed majority stake sale in IDBI Bank, saying, "No public sector bank should be privatised; they are not contributing to the country's development."

@CNBCTV18Live@YashJain88 LIC always wanted a banking license to boost its bancassurance. If that's the goal, why is LIC divesting instead of fully acquiring and running IDBI Bank? @LICIndiaForever
#2QWithCNBCTV18 | #LIC CEO & MD R Doraiswamy says the exclusive bancassurance partnership with #IDBIBank may not continue after its divestment, with other life insurers also expected to sell through the bank
He attributes slower APE growth to higher protection premiums and lower ULIP premiums, while expecting interest in ULIPs to revive as market volatility eases
“This (IDBI) bid needs to be cancelled, because it causes a loss to the country." - Subhash Chandra Garg, former Finance Secretary, GoI.
#Video@Subhashgarg1960 has explained the scandal in the IDBI-Fairfax deal very clearly. 👇
His point is when you open a bid that is below the earlier reserve, reject it, then reopen only to the same parties and only then produce a new lower valuation that the known bid comfortably clears, the process no longer looks like a genuine competitive price discovery exercise. That is why an expert like him is calling it scandalous and demanding the deal be cancelled and redone properly.
IDBI BANK'S OWN CAPITAL TO FINANCE ITS OWN TAKEOVER?
Is this the model of disinvestment being pursued by the @BJP4India Government????
If IDBI Bank's own capital is being used to facilitate its acquisition by Fairfax, serious questions arise about the fairness, transparency and public interest behind the proposed sale.
Why should a public institution's own financial strength become a means to transfer its ownership into private hands?
IDBI Bank was built with public money, strengthened by the hard work of its employees and trusted by millions of Indians.
IDBI Bank is not for sale. Public money must serve the public, not facilitate private ownership!
✊ STOP IDBI PRIVATISATION!

If the proposed sale of IDBI Bank is in the public interest, why hesitate to face an open debate?@SecyDIPAM
We openly challenge the DIPAM Secretary and Government representatives to come face-to-face with IDBI Bank Unions on a LIVE public platform.
