Why do NRIs settled in developed countries come to India for a vacation and start acting like 10-minute grocery delivery is the gold standard of development?
I would still take clean air, reliable public transport, walkable pavements, and roads without potholes.
When I was in UK two years ago, there was a long queue near a telephone booth. Later, I learnt that the telephone booth was popular among Insta users. Hence, the queue.
Social media trends have turned the world’s most beautiful places into endless bathroom lines at a concert, where everyone waits for hours just to take the same photo to show to people who couldn’t care less 🌎📸
Nothing captures the shallow decay of our time better than this
Indians are blaming Infy/Murthy/Nandan for a lack of home-grown LLM. But that blame is misplaced. Infy/Murthy/Nandan could never start an AI company. They had money and they could have fund something. But that again, is their money and why should they risk it?
The real culprit here is Amitabh Kant and other IAS like him. These are the people, why I left India and started two companies in the US. These are the people, why much of Indian talent left to work for US based companies. And these folks did well.
Let's say the government gives me $10B and ask me to set up an AI lab in India. Am I qualified to do it? YES. Will I do it? HELL NO
And you would ask why? Some would say that I have a cozy life in the US. Some would say, I have deep connection in the US, including family. All of that is correct but does not pin point the reason why I wont start a company in India.
The real reason is Babu. Unlike, many In India who think competing for 1000 seats using some bullshit essay writing contest makes Babu some wizard, I have not come across one, I will hire as an analyst. Under no circumstance, I am gonna report to a babu (Happy report to Dharmendra Pradhan or Smriti Irani though). Also, under no circumstances, I will accept a position where I am unable to fire and put an IAS in jail if they reported to me and indulged in some corruption.
Till this babu problem is fixed, no NRI would come to India. If I were the CIA or CCP, trying to ensure that India does not gain AI independence, I would make every effort to protect Babu fiefdom.
The way Brazil played as a team, although it had many stars, made me a fan of Brazil. Ever since, my first choice is Brazil and the second choice is Argentina.
I grew up reading about Pele and Maradona. In 1990, I could watch Maradona play, but that world cup was an anticlimax. Defenders targeted Maradona, making him fall often. And, there was a drug issue.
In 1994, I watched the first game played by Brazil and hooked to that team.
Its fascinating how among an older generation in India the Brazil Argentina support really depended on whether you started watching in 1982 and before or 1986.
Those who grew up on the stories of Pele and the film Giants of Brazil about the 1970 WC were usually hard core Brazil supporters, as were the ones captivated by that fabled 1982 Brazil team led by Zico and Socrates.
But if they started watching in earnest in 1986, they almost always became Argentina fans thanks to Maradona's magic.
There's probably a similar Argentina wave now with Messi, but thanks to global sport access getting better, a lot of national team support in a neutral like India is attached to favourite club players or teams.

I'm a funeral director. Nineteen years. You'd think after that long, very little would surprise you. You're wrong.
Last year a father called me after losing his wife in a car accident. Gone instantly. He had a request I'd never heard before.
"I want my seven-year-old twins to see her before the funeral." I hesitated.
Most families shield children from that. His voice cracked. "They keep asking when Mommy is coming home. They still think this is temporary.
I don't know how to help them understand." I spent hours preparing her. More carefully than usual. Not because the work was different.
Because the visitors were. I've prepared thousands of people over the years. That day felt different.
When the twins arrived, they climbed onto a small step stool beside their mother's casket.
The little girl reached for her hand first. Pulled back slightly. "She's cold." Their father knelt beside them. Fighting tears. "Yes, sweetheart.
Ambani can have 27 floors, private cinema, snow room, helipads, 168-car garage... but you still breathe the same toxic air. Traffic jams hit your convoy too. Noise pollution doesn't care how much you're worth. Slums stare back at your balcony every single day.
You can own islands & planes, but daily life? Still Indian reality.
What kind of "win" is that?
Moral of the story: Money amplifies comfort, but it doesn't rewrite your environment.
If the country around you is broken — roads, governance, civic sense — even ₹2 lakh crore can't buy the life a middle-class guy gets in Singapore or Tokyo.
