We are saddened to learn of the passing of 101-year-old WWll Firefighter Olive Whitcombe. Olive joined the National Fire Service in 1941 & kept watch from the roof of Westminster Abbey during the Blitz & was a Control Officer after the war. Thoughts are with her family & friends

What triggers a fire sprinkler?
A typical sprinkler head consists of a plug held in place by a trigger mechanism. The most common type of trigger is a glass ampule filled with a glycerin-based liquid that expands when heated. 155º triggers the mechanism and the water is released.

Fire sprinkler systems are actually quite sophisticated and are designed to be heat sensitive so that sprinklers only activate when the temperatures rise to fire-induced temps, usually somewhere between 155 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit

What is the red stuff in fire sprinklers?
In some sprinklers, the plug is a small glass bulb full of a glycerine-based liquid designed to expand and shatter when it gets hot. The basic idea is the plug is meant to break and open the sprinkler as soon as a fire breaks out.
Scotland; new schools are sprinkler protected, as are new care homes and high rise flats. In England all high rise buildings over 30m must have sprinkler protection. 2011 Wales became the first country in the world to make installation of fire sprinklers in new homes mandatory!
