A power outage caused a late start at the Booneville vs Corinth football game last night, but the action was back and forth when the lights came back on.
The opening kick wasn't until after 8:30 and the home team Booneville Blue Devils took a 23-13 victory over Corinth. It was the first meeting between the two since 2016 and the first Booneville win in the series since 2014.
The Blue Devils got on the board first on a safety thanks to an errant Corinth snap, then they followed that with a Zion Nunn touchdown on the ensuing free kick. On the ensuing kickoff, the Warriors fumbled and Booneville capitalized on the error with a Noah Gillom 30 yard strike to Braxton Orender for a 16-0 4 minutes into contest.
The Warriors would battle back to cut the lead to 3 thanks to a Nick Woods interception return for a touchdown, but that is as close as Corinth would get.
Booneville is taking on rival Baldwyn in their next game. Corinth takes on New Albany.
East Union gets their first fast pitch state title and Lucy Cochran puts an exclamation point on her 8th grade year: Miss Softball had 2 complete games, 2 W, 15 K’s and 2 runs allowed. 4-7 at the plate with 2 doubles. She’s a problem. Congrats to Coach Blythe and EU!
The Big 5 Sports in Mississippi are universally considered to be Football, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Baseball and Softball. Over the last 3 years in the Big 5, Booneville has ripped off a stretch unlike any I have seen: 8 titles including todays softball 3-peat. Unreal.
Hallie Burns stepped in the circle for the 5th time in a state championship game on Tuesday. I don't know that she's been in it without her signature cross painted on her face. She will tell you why:
"My athletic ability doesn't come from me, it comes from God."
The ability, God given, is there in spades.
In the 5 starts Hallie has made in state championship games, against the best the state has to offer, here is the stat line of Miss Softball:
5 wins. 0 losses. 5 complete games. 1 earned run for a 0.15 ERA. 14 hits allowed. 47 Strikeouts in 35 innings.
A super emotional Hallie Burns postgame interview. Worth the watch. Thanking God and her teammates and talks about playing through visible pain. Burns is so poised and is always giving her all. Hard not to want to see her succeed, Ole Miss softball is getting a good one.
Given the stakes and the history between these opponents, Booneville’s 10th inning walk off 4-3 Game 3 win over Kossuth to claim a North Half title is the best high school softball game we’ve ever covered.
And the Queens of the North hold on to their crown. The 2x defending champs from Booneville win an all time classic against Kossuth 4-3 in 10 innings. They will go for the 3-peat next week.

No surprise, but the Kossuth/a Booneville softball game has been an all timer. Here is the third out in the bottom of the 7th. Extra innings we go, tied 1-1.
It's Hallie Burns for 3A Miss Softball. The senior hurler and Ole Miss signee has turned in one of the most dominant high school pitching careers in Mississippi history.
Booneville is looking for a 3 peat. They were leading Amory 3-2 with the tying run on third base in the bottom of the 7th. Hallie Burns got the K to end it.
“We thrive under pressure,” she told us in the postgame interview.

Hallie Burns with the K to end it and she is FIRED UP. Booneville is moving on. In a classic, Booneville edges Amory 3-2. They take the series 2-1. The Lady Blue Devils move on to their third straight Class 3A North Half Championship series, next week at Kossuth. The race for back to back to back titles lives on.
Amory and Booneville softball are set to square off in game 3 today at ICC. Should be a good one! Two really good teams.
We will have game coverage today there and multiple other games. Gotta love playoff time!
As the last seconds ticked away in the 3A boys state championship and it was clear that Booneville was going to win, I feel like this picture captured what Blue Devil Head Coach Michael Smith was feeling knowing he had just won 4 state titles in two years and his 7th state title overall. An unbelievable coaching career....and Booneville isn't going anywhere.
12 years ago, Kenny Paul Geno won a state championship as a Sophmore at Booneville under head coach Michael Smith. 3 year old Ava Kate Smith, Michaels daughter, would have KPG carry her into the gym on his shoulders. Yesterday, 12 years to the day later, Kenny Paul was on the bench coaching Sophmore Ava Kate to a back-to-back state title. Ava Kate scored 19 points and the two embraced in a bear hug after it was clear the title was going to go to Booneville.
Life comes full circle sometimes. We are glad to get to see it and capture Mississippi memories.
