In practice, it is nearly always applied to data with exponential growth.
@nntaleb In fact, if the vote/population sizes are on [a,b], let t = b/a and choose a log equal to t/k, and try values like k = 8 where the data wraps around the distribution 8 times. For practical matters, this smooths a lot of situations with convexity in the data.
