Aspiring teachers learn, grow, and succeed during residency. It’s challenging, rewarding, and prepares you for a long career in the classroom. New Mexico has seen how funding teacher residencies changes education: https://t.co/Oz6Phecjd0
Residencies give a fuller picture of what it’s like to teach. Candidates get to see all the parts of the school year, from setting up classrooms to cleaning up after graduation—and learn from all that’s in between. It’s the best way to prepare teachers for a successful career.
Residency-trained teachers are confident, committed, and stay in the classroom longer. With schools facing severe shortages and high hiring costs, teacher residency partnerships are a viable pathway to a stable, secure workforce.
It takes practice to master any skill, and teaching is no different. Teacher residencies provide scaffolded support during clinical practice, building a strong foundation for teachers to rely on in their own classrooms.

A huge thanks to all mentors for helping to prepare the next generation of teachers💌
When a teacher resident learns to teach in the community they grew up in, it not only cultivates a sense of belonging in the resident, it allows them to connect deeply with students in their classroom.

In New Mexico’s teacher residencies, students get more immediate support, teachers have instructional partners, and districts have a well-prepared, familiar hiring pool.
Teacher residencies are a powerful tool to expand grow-your-own teacher preparation programs. In NM, schools have benefitted from having community members join them as teacher residents, before being hired to teach in the very schools they attended as students!
