One thing about HIV infection is, if discovered on time and treated with appropriate drugs and lifestyle modifications, one will live a long life with no issues.
While attending to patients, there was one elderly woman who had been on ARV for 20 years I attended to. She was looking agile, we were cracking jokes and laughing. I bid her farewell and told her to take care while I attended to the next person.
Someone who is infected with HIV, and is judiciously taking his/her medications, at one point, the viral load becomes so low it can’t even register in tests: it becomes “undetectable”. And “undetectable = untransmitable”.
The chances of someone whose HIV viral load is undetectable transmitting the infection is very very very low. It’s almost impossible.
The purpose of this post is to let you know you can live a long and healthy life even with HIV infection. Take your medications and lead a healthy life: don’t smoke, cutoff alcohol, exercise daily (lose weight if you’re overweight, it’s good for your immunity), cut off added sugar and sugary drinks (sugar is bad for your immune system), eat real cooked food, and vegetables, take your rest properly, stay hydrated, and you will be doing fine.
Very important: that your viral load is undetectable doesn’t mean you’re “cured”. It means the virus has been so suppressed, it can’t do you any harm. If you stop taking the drugs that are suppressing the virus, things can escalate. Always take your meds as instructed.
Finally, always speak with your healthcare provider if you have any confusion or issues.
