Meet the Greats of Pediatric Rheumatology: Dr. James T. Cassidy
Widely regarded as the “father of pediatric rheumatology,” Dr. James T. Cassidy helped establish pediatric rheumatology as a recognized subspecialty and shaped generations of clinicians through his leadership, teaching, and research. He authored the influential Textbook of Pediatric Rheumatology, which became a defining reference in the field, and published hundreds of scientific papers advancing the understanding and treatment of pediatric rheumatic diseases.
Beyond academic medicine, Dr. Cassidy championed education, mentorship, and patient-centered care. His legacy continues through initiatives including the James T. Cassidy Award, the Cassidy Conference, and Camp Jambalaya for children with rheumatic illnesses.

Eve Smith shares cSLE-T2T-GLOBAL data validating pediatric T2T endpoints across the UK JSLE Cohort (n = 492), the CARRA Registry (n = 1,074), and the JIRcohort (n = 215) in childhood #SLE (N = 1,781).
• Across 12,915 visits and median 3.5 years follow-up, target attainment was achieved in 66.3% for cLLDAS, 54.1% for cCR, and 46.7% for cCR-0.
• Median time from first visit to target was 11.2 months for cLLDAS, 14.0 months for cCR, and 16.8 months for cCR-0.
• Being in cLLDAS at the previous visit was associated with lower subsequent high disease activity risk (HR, 0.29; p < 0.05).
• Greater time spent in cLLDAS was associated with progressively lower risk of subsequent high disease activity, with HRs of 0.67, 0.45, 0.30, and 0.20 for 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of follow-up time in target, respectively.
• Greater time spent in cLLDAS was also associated with progressively lower risk of new damage, with HRs of 0.70, 0.49, 0.34, and 0.24 for 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of follow-up time in target, respectively.
These data support cLLDAS as a pediatric T2T endpoint associated with reduced high disease activity and new damage risk in childhood SLE.
