New car prices have reached a major fork in the road.

People fail to realize this.

I call it the the "American Automotive Straddle".

3 factors to melt your brain:

1) New car inventory levels are at a 2-YEAR HIGH.
2) New car loan rates are at a 2-DECADE HIGH.

All else being equal, these 2 factors alone should crush new car prices (mostly the Domestic brands*).

But else isn't equal.

The world is a mess and full of surprises.

That brings us to the third factor:

3) A United Auto Workers strike looks INCREASINGLY LIKELY.

My prediction:

I have no clue which way Domestic new car prices are headed. But I do predict that pricing volatility will significantly increase.

Here's what I mean -

1) we'll either see GM, Ford and Stellantis (for the most part) announcing much bigger rebates in light of growing inventory levels

or...

2) the United Auto Workers strike will set inventory levels 12-18 months back and mark-ups will make a bigger comeback than the 2017 Patriots.

Big rise of big fall to end 2023.

That's my prediction for new car prices.
