Suddenly, the voices have gone silent. No one speaks anymore about the 45 abducted pupils and teachers of Oyo State who remain in captivity. The government is quiet. The people are quiet. It no longer stirs us. After all, “they are not our children, nor are they related to us”. But they are citizens. They are fellow Nigerians.

Bit by bit, we are becoming numb to pain. We are learning to accept and normalize terrorism, banditry, and lawlessness. Yesterday it was the Chibok girls in Borno, then the Dapchi girls in Yobe, the Kankara schoolboys in Katsina, the Jangebe schoolgirls in Zamfara, the Kuriga students in Kaduna, the Papiri students in Niger, and now the Oriire children and teachers in Oyo. Each tragedy piles upon the other, yet we remain disturbingly comfortable with the government’s failure to protect lives and property.

Why this comfort? Because our own families are “safe.”?

It is heartbreaking. It is excruciating. And it is a dangerous silence.
