Last May, the Dept. of the Interior released its report on fed Indian boarding schools, finding that, from 1819-1969, the U.S. operated or supported 408 boarding schools across 37 states (or then-territories), including 15 sites in WA.

#waleg final budget proposal includes $500K for the biennium for the AG to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Tribal Advisory Committee to focus on the operation and impact of Indian boarding schools, a tool that targeted Native kids to advance an assimilationist agenda.
Very cool job opening at @budget_policy for a senior analyst focused on immigrant justice.

#HB317 is getting its first hearing in Senate Public Health in one hour. This bill, also known as MICWA, would adopt Indian Child Welfare Act standards at the state level. We'll be tweeting updates from the hearing, where our state-tribal policy analyst Jade Bahr will testify.
Is it just me, or are the #waleg budget-making process and the WA budget in general opaque?
I just want program-level budget info by biennium, and I just want to know what's happening. These are my simple hopes and dreams.

I’m genuinely curious. On the night before #waleg session begins, how, in a state that is home to 29 federally recognized tribal nations, are so few bills tagged here?
1/9 🧵: There's a lot to unpack in the story out today by @mtfreepress re: cmts made on tribal sovereignty and all MTs’ legal right to exercise their vote. The piece references @Montanabudget, and we encourage folks to read the entire report and related reports. #mtnews#mtleg
🧵
1/7 Not only is this resolution wildly offensive, it’s also a mess that reflects a lack of understanding about tribal sovereignty and Indian Country.
#mtleg#mtpol
6/7 The resolution tries to minimize the significance and questions the legitimacy of tribal sovereignty, but this offensive mess can’t get around or hide the fact that tribal sovereignty is real.

#waleg session starts next week! There's no better time to think about the next step in your policy career.
Apply to join a team that's working on issues like direct cash, criminal legal reform, and progressive revenue.

The biggest argument against the expansion of the Child Tax Credit is that it creates a work disincentive: give parents money, and parents will work less.
I find it hollow and hypocritical to the point of cruelty, considering what's at stake: a reduction in child poverty.

BIPOC face ongoing barriers to homeownership (regardless of income) that have roots in discriminatory policies & practices.
A report today to #waleg finds BIPOC would need to buy 140K homes to reach parity w/ white homeownership rates in WA.
Housing justice is racial justice.
