Cocaine found in Rabada’s urine sample
South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has returned to cricket after serving a one-month suspension for a positive cocaine test.
The banned substance was detected in a urine sample collected on January 21, 2025, following an SA20 match, according to the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS).
The test revealed a low concentration of benzoylecgonine (BZE), a metabolite of cocaine, suggesting the drug was used out of competition and not on match day. Rabada was formally notified of the result on April 1 and did not challenge the findings or request a B-sample analysis.
The 29-year-old withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he was playing for the Gujarat Titans, and began serving a provisional suspension on April 3.
His legal team successfully argued that the drug use was not performance-related, allowing him to benefit from a reduced sanction under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines. Instead of a standard three-month ban, Rabada completed a one-month suspension after undergoing a substance abuse treatment program.
Rabada rejoined the IPL on May 3 and remains in contention for selection in the upcoming World Test Championship final in June. In a statement, he apologized for his actions, acknowledging his mistake and reaffirming his commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards.
