There exists within our home
A thing that shouldn’t belong there
It’s a descendent of a deadly wolf
That snores and has nightmares
Somehow it made a bond with us
Though no common words exchanged
You would die for this beast
And it would do the same
If it joins you when it’s small
You deal with endless nonsense
It chews through socks and legs of chairs
Leaving your arms mauled
The creature then becomes full size
It will be your very best friend
You speak to it secrets and truths
Taking adventures beneath the sky
That creature ages all too fast
And it slows down to rest and sleep
The twilight years of this thing
Slumbering quietly at your feet
A dog’s life will end much too short
Leaving heavy grief and tears
They get a fraction of time upon the earth
That they deserve for what they are worth
Yet dogs and humans have made this deal
To live with each other despite the mess
Dogs just want love and a steady meal
Dogs require so much less
They are heroes, workers, helpers, part of the team.
They are family as much as anyone.
So when people say:
“All dogs are good dogs”
You know exactly what they mean.

Happy International Dog Day!
How do young people ask you to lower the car window? Do they still use the 'crank' gesture? Do they move a finger up and down? Do they even ask people to lower the window? Also, why were we asking folk to lower windows so often that there was a universally accepted gesture?
