Great to be back at @VindolandaTrust and it’s nice to see it busy for half term holidays. A view from the replica wall turret over the fort and vicus (settlement). Not a high level hen house but the modern stairs on the roof #HadriansWall#RomanBritain
Feb 18th 2024 I'll be heading down to Highgate, North London, to begin work on reconstructing one of the Roman kilns there. It will have a lot in common with this one that we built at Vindolanda, but will be considerably larger. #archaeology#Roman https://t.co/NKevqA7bvU
🦔 Ancient Cycladic hedgehog! This little guy is from Chalandriani, Syros, Greece. He dates to the Early Cycladic II period (2800-2300 BCE). National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece. 📷 My own.
In 2016 we uncovered 421 shoes in one excavation season. This pair were part of that hoard. Wonderful to see them feature along with many other Vindolanda artefacts in the @britishmuseum Legion: life in the Roman Army exhibition.
Come and join us this half-term to find out more about festivals and feasts in the Roman world! 🦚📍 @RomanCaerleon
