The film was smuggled out of the camp by the Polish underground, hidden inside a tube of toothpaste by Helena Dantón, who worked in the SS canteen.

The only known images of the process of killing during the Holocaust.

The photographs were smuggled out of the camp and given to Polish resistance fighters to show the world what was happening and to give testimony about the extermination.

The images were taken within 15–30 minutes of each other by an inmate inside Auschwitz Birkenau, the extermination camp within the Auschwitz complex. Several sources identified the photographer as Alberto Errera, a Greek military officer whose code name was Alekos Alexandridis.

The company continued to cater to the needs of the SS killers: on October 26, 1942 they applied for a patent for a 4-storey crematorium with conveyor belts intended to increase the speed which bodies could be burned. No executives of Topf and Sons were prosecuted after the war.

The Oven Makers - Topf & Sons

Topf and Sons sold ovens to the SS for most of the major concentration camps in Germany. The company was also responsible for parts of the gas chambers as well as ovens at Auschwitz, where its employees supervised the construction.

At least four fitters from the company travelled to Auschwitz to oversee the installation of the systems and to ensure they functioned properly. These tasks required them to observe the murder of Jews.
