Unconditional military, financial, or political support often brings out the worst in the groups that receive it.

The US unconditional support for Israel helped create an environment in which figures like Netanyahu, Ben Gvir, and Smotrich could act with increasing confidence that there would be few meaningful consequences. That sense of impunity has contributed to policies and rhetoric that are increasingly extreme.

Qatar and parts of the entirety of the Islamic world continued supporting Hamas with little accountability. Over time, Hamas appeared to become convinced that whatever it did was justified as part of a divine mission from god.

The Palestinian Authority provides another example. For decades, Arab and Western governments have poured money into it, often without demanding meaningful reforms. The result has been an institution widely criticized for corruption, inefficiency, and a lack of accountability.

The common thread is not religion, ethnicity, or ideology. It is unconditional external backing. When leaders and movements believe support will continue regardless of their actions, accountability erodes, moderation weakens, and the worst tendencies are often reinforced.

يلا شوي شوي يا محمود ممكن تفهموا إنه الفلسطيني ما إله غير الفلسطيني.

والخلاصة اللي شكلها بدها سنيييييين لنوصلها، لا العربي رح يحلها، ولا الأعجمي، ولا المسلم، ولا المسيحي، ولا اليهودي، ولا الملحد. الفلسطيني ما إله إلا الفلسطيني، ومشكلته بالنهاية مع الفلسطيني، وحله كمان مع الفلسطيني.
