Ugandan Officer Cadet Ruhamya Kainerugaba Graduates from Sandhurst

Officer Cadet Ruhamya Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom after completing the academy’s prestigious 44-week Officer Commissioning Course.

General Muhoozi attended the Sovereign’s Parade in Surrey to witness his son’s commissioning. Ahead of the ceremony, he was received by Major General Nick Cowley OBE, the Academy Commandant, who presented him with a Sandhurst Alumni medal—a distinction introduced after Gen. Kainerugaba’s own time at the academy.

Ruhamya was commissioned alongside fellow Ugandan Officer Cadet Andrew Bakira and other British and international cadets.

The graduation carries particular significance for the Kainerugaba family. Gen. Muhoozi himself graduated from Sandhurst in 2000, and in the weeks leading up to the parade, he shared photographs comparing his own officer training with his son’s, reflecting on a “father and son going through the same hardships, separated by 27 years.”

The Sandhurst course is widely regarded as one of the world’s most demanding military leadership programmes, covering tactics, weapons systems, fieldcraft, operational planning, ethics and command under pressure.

Addressing the newly commissioned officers, General Sir Roly Walker, Chief of the General Staff, warned that the global security environment is changing rapidly and that military dominance can no longer be taken for granted.

He reminded the young officers of their central responsibility: to earn the trust of the soldiers they lead and be prepared to fight and win their nations’ battles.

“Serve to Lead”—the academy’s enduring motto—was at the heart of his message.

As Ruhamya and his fellow graduates begin their careers, they now return to their respective armed forces, including the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), to serve as commissioned officers.

I have repeatedly read from different fora and, most recently, watched a clip from Hon. Ssemujju Nganda on how, sijui, Mzee Museveni appoints his family members such as the wife as Minister, Gen. Saleh to OWC, his son as CDF, Hon. Shartsi Kuteesa and Hon. Alice Kaboyo as Ministers etc., etc., to public offices and I have always wanted to say this.

HEAR ME OUT; why is it that nobody questioned when Mzee Amos Kaguta’s sons were in the bush fighting for this nation’s freedom? Nobody cared when Gen. Salim Saleh had bullets go through his body while liberating this country? Nobody questioned when Gen. Muhoozi served his nation in Garamba, Somalia +++.

My fellow Ugandans, why should being the President’s wife, brother, son, or relative disqualify a Ugandan from serving their own nation?

Isn’t that clear double standards? Should we say that their sacrifice was never a problem then but now that reward is involved offense takes precedence?

I must say this, President Museveni has a proven record of identifying, nurturing talent and bringing out the best in people. I’m curious if the eye that has spotted ability in countless Ugandans with no relation to him at all and elevated them to serve with him is the same eye that would go blind or biased the moment it looked at those close to it.

Anyway, enough of my rant.
