COVID was a live-action replay of the Milgram experiment.
No walls. No laboratory. No electrodes.
Just a television, a daily briefing, and an authority figure in a suit telling people what to do.
And the results were exactly the same.
For those unfamiliar, Stanley Milgram’s landmark experiments in the 1960s demonstrated that ordinary people, when placed under institutional authority and given clear instructions, would administer what they believed to be severe electric shocks to innocent strangers simply because someone in a position of authority told them to continue.
The conclusion was uncomfortable and definitive.
Obedience to authority, in the presence of sufficient social pressure, overrides individual conscience in the vast majority of people.
COVID proved it again. At global scale. In real time.
But the truly devastating part the part that I find most difficult to reconcile , was the medical profession.
Doctors. Physicians. People who spent years “studying” human biology, pharmacology, immunology, and medical ethics. People who took an oath. People who knew or had every professional obligation to know that mandating an experimental intervention, suppressing early treatment, isolating the dying from their families, and dismissing adverse events without investigation was a profound violation of everything their training stood for.
And so many of them did it anyway.
Not reluctantly. Enthusiastically.
Do as you’re told was not a private capitulation for most of them. It was performed publicly, proudly, wrapped in the language of science and responsibility and care by people who had abandoned all three the moment the institutional authority spoke.
Follow the science became the most cynical slogan of the era. Deployed not by people following evidence but by people following orders and using the language of reason to avoid the discomfort of exercising it.
Milgram’s most haunting finding was not that monsters do terrible things.
It was that ordinary people do when the structure around them makes it easy enough.
We just watched it happen again.
And the lesson, as always, is the same.
An obedient population is only as safe as the integrity of whoever is giving the orders.
Think for yourself.
Question everything.
And never under any pressure, from any authority switch off your conscience because someone told you to.
March 1984: Time Magazine runs "Cholesterol: And Now The Bad News" with a sad face made of bacon and eggs on the cover.
The article declares total war on dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. Eggs are poison. Butter is death.
The American public freaks out and switches to margarine and egg whites overnight.
September 2014: Time Magazine runs "Eat Butter" with a photograph of a butter curl.
Thirty years later they admit they were wrong. The science never supported the cholesterol hypothesis.
Saturated fat doesn't cause heart disease. Dietary cholesterol doesn't raise blood cholesterol significantly.
But here's what happened between those covers:
Three decades of people avoiding eggs and butter.
Three decades of margarine consumption spreading trans fats through the population.
Three decades of low-fat products loaded with sugar.
Three decades of heart disease rates climbing despite everyone following the guidelines.
Time Magazine spent 30 years terrifying people about fat, contributed to an obesity and diabetes epidemic, then quietly admitted "oops, never mind" with a butter curl photograph.
No apology. No accountability. No acknowledgment of the damage.
Just "eat butter" like they hadn't spent three decades telling you it would kill you.
The people who believed them in 1984 and avoided fat for 30 years while getting sicker don't get those years back. The metabolic damage is done. The trust is destroyed.
But at least Time got two iconic covers out of it.
A friend told me recently that his wife whose an MD at a major local hospital is seriously considering leaving medicine.
Not because she stopped caring about patients or long hours but because of the pressure from above.
In her system, every diagnosis comes with the expectation of prescribing the drug that matches the code.
If she doesn’t? She gets questioned. Evaluated. Sometimes even financially penalized through performance metrics tied to “quality measures." This sounds noble but really just means “Did you give the patient the medication the system expects?”
He said she's been dealing with it for a while and it seems to get worse every year.
She didn’t go into medicine to be a cog in a pharmaceutical machine. She went in to actually help people.
But the hospital’s incentives don’t reward lifestyle coaching, nutrition conversations, movement prescriptions, or digging into root causes.
There’s no bonus for helping a patient reverse insulin resistance.
But there's plenty tied to metrics on prescribing statins, GLP-1s, antihypertensives, SSRIs, and anything else that fits neatly into a billing code.
And the saddest part? This isn’t rare.
Between pay-for-performance systems, pharma influence, and hospital revenue structures tied to drug utilization, the entire system nudges doctors away from thinking and toward prescribing.
Many MDs feel trapped: If they want to practice slow, thoughtful medicine there’s no time. Or if they want to focus on root causes there’s no billing code.
If they want to avoid unnecessary meds they risk being flagged for “not meeting standards.” So many of the good doctors are quietly slipping away.
And we wonder why chronic disease keeps rising.
A system that incentivizes prescriptions will always produce more prescriptions.
A system that rewards dependency will always create more dependent patients.
And a system that punishes critical thinkers will eventually lose all of them.
My friend’s wife isn’t leaving medicine. She’s being pushed out of it.
And until we fix the incentives, she won’t be the last.
Dear Michelle Obama.
Let me school your miserable muthafuckin ass since you can’t seem to remember how blessed you are.
You are married to the first Black president in American history.
You are the first Black First Lady in American history.
Because of that, you and Barack left the White House richer than when yall slithered into it.
Because of that, your Black ass got a multi-million-dollar book deal.
Because of that, you and your FAKE ASS HUSBAND walked away with a $60 million Netflix deal.
Because of that, yall own mansions.
Because of that, yall own beachfront property.
Because of that, yalls kids and grandkids are set for life.
Because of ALL OF THAT, your family’s net worth is over $100 million.
And yet you got the muthafuckin nerve to still get on stage whining like you picking cotton in 1855 instead of sipping champagne in Martha’s Vineyard.
No Black American woman will ever be as privileged as you are bitch.
So sit your ungrateful, race-hustling ass down and thank the country you spent 8 years shitting on.
America gave you EVERYTHING.
The least you could do is shut the fuck up and smile, ho.
Today, I am going to post a white square for Iryna Zarutska. This is how it works, right? She was actually murdered. There is no way that anyone can tell us otherwise. Her life mattered.
@GuntherEagleman Are you new here? Nobody that high up in government is going to jail ever! It’s all theater, keeping you entertained and naive. Right/left they all play for the same team and we are the losers.🤷♀️
