As January draws to a close, and we see what’s happening across Africa, one truth remains clear: democracy is not sustained by election days alone. It is preserved, or eroded, by everyday choices, civic courage, and collective vigilance.

Across Nigeria, citizens continue to face familiar challenges: insecurity, economic pressure, weak service delivery, and growing distrust in public institutions. Yet, even in these conditions, Nigerians keep showing resilience. Communities are organising. Volunteers are monitoring. Ordinary people are speaking up.

This is where your role matters. What are you going to do differently in the next one year?

Democracy does not defend itself. It requires active citizens who are willing to observe, document, question, and engage. Whether it is reporting irregularities at polling units, demanding accountability from service providers, or simply educating others on their civic rights—every action counts.

At Citizen Monitors, we continue to emphasize one simple principle: protect your space. Lock down your polling unit. Digitally secure your polling unit. Know what is happening around you. Use your voice responsibly. Evidence changes conversations, and participation changes outcomes.

As we look ahead to upcoming civic processes and electoral activities in 2026, now is the time to prepare—not later. Build local networks. Encourage neighbours to stay informed.
