Today, I will be joining the @go2uj Vice Chancellor, Prof. Letlhokwa Mpedi, to sign an MOU supporting UJ’s newly awarded UNESCO Chair on Cultural Inclusivity and Equity in Digital Media in Africa.
Today, we formalised a strategic partnership between the University of Johannesburg and @CommsZA under the UNESCO Chair Initiative.
This collaboration is about shaping a digital future that is inclusive, representative, and grounded in African realities. It brings together government and academia to advance research, inform policy, and drive innovation in areas such as digital inclusion, cultural representation, and the responsible development of emerging technologies.
Importantly, this agreement lays the foundation for practical programmes that will address the digital divide, strengthen internet governance, and contribute to the broader goal of a decolonised digital ecosystem in Africa.
Through this partnership, we are not only contributing to global discourse, but ensuring that Africa actively shapes its own digital destiny.
The University of Johannesburg is proud to partner with Minister and @SollyMalatsi in advancing a more inclusive and equitable digital media landscape across Africa.
This milestone reflects UJ’s ongoing commitment to innovation, skills development, and meaningful participation in the digital economy.

Building on the incredible success of the @MTNNG Media Innovation Programme, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP).
This landmark initiative, delivered in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and the African Editors Forum goes beyond training. It empowers journalists and editors across the continent with the skills, networks, and exposure to innovate and strengthen public trust in media.
The launch event at MTN Group headquarters was a powerful moment, bringing together Nigerian MIP fellows and alumni, senior editors, and key policymakers to celebrate this shared vision for a resilient, independent media landscape.
As MTN Group Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer, @NompiloMMorafo, perfectly put it: “Connectivity must build cohesion, not confusion. That is why MTN is investing in independent media as an institution of trust.”
A huge thank you to our partners @go2uj and @ForumTaef, and everyone who joined us. We are proud to invest in this vital institution and look forward to the incredible impact this program will have. #MediaInnovation #PanAfricanMIP
