Wrapping up at the CJD Foundation annual meeting. I got to share my research, as well as my music (yes, complete with trick fiddling). This is always my favourite conference, filled with families who care so much about this devastating disease and work tirelessly to keep us going
Just got the reviews from my talk at the American Academy of Neurology. My favourite is "informative and hilarious"... maybe I have a career in stand up?
Come join @PrionGirl and me to learn about the causes, investigations, and general approach to Rapid Progressive Dementia at #AANAM.
Special focus on #CJD and how to spot potentially treatment-responsive causes.
I decided to re-enter the Twitterverse! Or whatever they call it now... A LOT has happened since I last tweeted. But here I am at the American Academy of Neurology, talking about Prion diseases tomorrow, and posing for Ionis (I'm a site lead for their ASO prion disease trial!)
I'll be giving a short repeat interview on CBC Radio 1 today at 4:50 MDT, in Edmonton this time (yesterday was Calgary). Commenting on the CWD situation.
Even as a clinician scientist interested in prions, I am often involved in interesting neurological cases with other causes. While the cases are often tragic, they open up the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. Every now and then these wind up in publication...

Just wrapped up the PRION2019 meeting in my hometown of Edmonton. First chance to actually present some of my work at this meeting! https://t.co/5ns0hTyUq2
At the CJD Family meeting in Melbourne, Australia. It's always great to connect with people so directly impacted by CJD, to share what I know, help answer questions, and hopefully inspire some young researchers who are also present...
The good news: "Dear Prof. Valerie L Sim: I am pleased to inform you that your manuscript will be accepted..." The bad news: bile acids don't work at high doses or if given late in prion disease...
Just hosted my first CJD Foundation conference call. I think it went well - hard to tell when you can't see the faces of people to whom you are trying to explain protein folding. But most of them stayed on the line for the hour and a half...
Just saw a UofA Faculty of Med&Dent "science in the cinema" presentation of the movie Concussion. Not bad. Of course my favourite part was when they showed the tau tangles... Am I a geek? (rhetorical question)...
