Morocco is an emerging regional power in Africa.

A future regional hegemon.

It has the growing economy, expanding military reach, diplomatic wins on Western Sahara, and increasing influence across the Sahel and West Africa.

But it remains a mid-tier dependent player in the wider multipolar order.

It still needs external recognition, foreign investment, and security cover to lock in its interest.

These are provided by the Gulf and the TPS.

So that’s the actual consolidating axis.

They are building a coherent economic and security bloc across North and West Africa; ports, logistics corridors, phosphate and energy deals, counter-terrorism cooperation, and political cover for Morocco’s Sahara position.

So the incentive structure is something like this;

Morocco gets legitimacy, resources, and a stronger hand against Algeria.

Gulf states get a reliable African partner, commercial footholds, and a counterweight to Algeria’s orbit.

The TPS gets a functional partner that manages migration pressure on Europe, cooperates on security, and limits Chinese/Russian inroads,

without having to own the problem itself.

And ALL of the above have an economic stake in Western Sahara via Morocco.

Algeria sits on the opposing axis. It hosts and arms the Polisario, leverages its gas supplies to Europe, maintains closed borders with Morocco, and draws soft support from actors who prefer a fragmented Maghreb.

Every Spanish or European concession to Rabat is a loss for Algiers; every migration spike that forces Madrid to choose is an opportunity for both sides to test leverage.

The Ceuta episode is Morocco using its border control to extract movement on the Sahara.

Destabilising Europe is not the primary objective, consolidating a coherent African flank under Maroc-Gulf-TPS axis is.

@Leninstopguyy @nourxalnasser @EvanWritesOnX Many Moroccan dynasties ruled in the Sahara, even today’s Mauritania was part of the Cherifian Empire so it is natural for Moroccans to feel attached to that land. I visited Dakhla once and everyone looked Moroccan to me. It looks like you have a personal issue instead.

@nourxalnasser @EvanWritesOnX WS Sahara was ruled by Moroccan dynaties, chiefs pleaded allegiance to the rulers, paid taxes, got protection until 1884 when Spain colonized it. It’s Morocco’s way to find it’s backyard (West Africa). Algerians want to stop that.

Because they can’t.

They pay Morocco to secure the border.

Morocco can use that border as leverage whenever multi player incentives align.

Morocco is in complete control when it comes to turning the tap on.

This also means that any state that aligns policy with Morocco,

for example the Gulf,

will have indirect leverage over EU through the border.

Consider what they gain.

A more locked-in Spanish (and by extension European) position on Western Sahara, which undercuts Algeria and the Polisario.

Morocco looking useful as the reliable manager of Europe’s southern border the same role Gulf countries want to project for themselves as stabilising partners.

Reduced space for any deeper Spain-Algeria gas axis that could dilute their own energy and political influence in Europe.

And people think this is Israel lol.

Spain a vocal "Defender of Palestine" has itself a dark and brutal colonial past, nowhere more brutal than in Morocco.

The Rif War was a brutal colonial conflict in northern Morocco from 1921 to 1926. During this attempt to prevent Moroccan independence, Spanish and French forces crushed the Berber liberation movement led by Abd el-Krim, who had formed the Rif Republic after annihilating a Spanish army at Annual.

To break the will of the resistance, Spain dropped mustard gas and other chemical weapons from planes onto civillian villages, crops, and evwn poisoned water sources. They killed tens of tjosands of men, women and children.

The horrific burns, blindness, and cancers that followed were policy, they were deliberate. Then came the scorched earth, burning crops, poisoning wells, razing homes to starve out resistance.

Whole communities were wiped out or scattered. In the south, it was mass arrests, summary executions, torture camps to crush any hint of rebellion.

This is the very same Spain that still claims the Moroccan (African) territories of Ceuta and Melilla, are "Spanish"

Understand the history of some of those calling the loudest for "justice" in far off places, they are not so keen on calling for it closer to home.
